Sam is socially awkward but can see the workings of the world by entering his ‘mind palace’. Soon enough you’re trying to find out what really occurred, picking at the scabs of past relationships and town traumas as you go. You’re journalist Sam Higgs, returning to town for the funeral of an old friend, Nick, who died in an accident. But whatever the case, it feels like there was meant to be more. ![]() Perhaps it’s significant that the game was originally planned as an episodic release before being amalgamated into this single lump. Whenever it looks like it might break through the surface, it backs off and changes focus. This narrative-driven mystery adventure game from Dontnod Entertainment ( Life Is Strange, Tell Me Why) never really gets beneath these stock images of American life. I’ve never lived in a decaying mining community in West Virginia, but I’ve seen bars in places like Twin Mirror’s Basswood more times than I can remember. Neon sign on the door, old photos speckling the walls, a jukebox in the corner, baseball-capped rednecks filling a booth by the entrance. I’ve seen films and TV shows set in small town America, I know the decor. He hasn’t been there for a couple of years, but it’s still familiar. While it seems magical, it's simply a reflection of Sam's mind.A man walks into a bar. Instead, Sam has internal discussions with a darker version of himself, retreating into a "Mind Palace" to help him reconstruct memories and solve the game's mysteries. Second, the game's protagonist doesn't have any special powers to help him along his journey. The gameplay of investigating the environment for clues and making choices that led to different story endings is also the same. Again, Twin Mirror's story setup is similar to that of Tell Me Why and Life Is Strange. Samuel gets roped into investigating his friend's death while also dealing with his own personal demons. Finally, both have different endings depending on the player's actions throughout the game.ĭontnod's second post- Life Is Strange release was Twin Mirror, which follows investigative journalist Samuel Higgs as he returns to his West Virginia hometown to attend a friend's funeral. Both take place in a small town where the death of a central character occurred, and it is here that the protagonists' supernatural abilities aid them on their journeys. Both are episodic adventure games that revolve around players interacting with the environment to find clues and solve the central mystery. Tell Me Why shares a lot of similarities with the original Life Is Strange. Both twins have the ability to communicate with each other telepathically, and ability they use to piece together their memories of that fateful night and learn their mother's secrets. Tyler spent a decade in jail after confessing to killing his and Alyson's mother, and the twins have different memories of the night when the incident occurred. The game follows twin siblings Alyson and Tyler Ronan as they move back to their Alaskan hometown to sell their childhood home. ![]() Dontnod's first post- Life Is Strange game was Tell Me Why.
